The ACT Council of Parents and Citizens Associations has welcomed comments from the Territory Government about what will happen if the proposed 39 school closures go ahead.
The ACT Government is planning to close 39 schools across the Territory as part of its shake-up of the education system.
Chief Minister Jon Stanhope flagged the possibility of using excess school sites for future development but says there are no plans to sell school sites at this stage.
"Any school that is closed as a result of this process will be subject to due consideration about a best and better further or continuing use," he said.
"It may be that particular sites would be sold for aged care accommodation or supported housing and I would have thought that would have been a result which would have been applauded by the broader community."
Council president Jane Gorrie says she is glad the Government has disclosed what it plans to do with the sites if the schools are closed.
But she says the Government should think about future needs of each school community.
"A school site could possibly be used for other community purposes that are very valuable for our society as we're looking ahead, as our society changes," she said.
"So council wouldn't support the sale of those school sites for anything else other than community use."
Ms Gorrie says she is happy to hear the Government is not looking to make commercial gains from school closures.
But she wants the Government to refrain from selling former school land off to the private sector.
"If you look at the way schools are located, within suburbs, they've been planned to provide green space, to provide a community facility for access to the whole community," she said.
"So I think a lot of people would be upset to see a school site be sold off. "
