Wolves re-sign reserve forward Reed

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Timberwolves re-signed restricted free agent forward Justin Reed to a multiyear contract on Wednesday.

The Wolves made Reed, who was acquired in the seven-player January trade that sent Wally Szczerbiak to Boston, a qualifying offer on June 30 and had the right to match any contract offer made to him by another team.

General manager Jim Stack said no other team extended Reed an offer, and the third-year veteran said he wanted to remain in Minnesota.

"I think he really fit in with how we want to play," Stack said of Reed's hustle and versatility on defense.

In 40 games with Minnesota after the deal, including six starts, Reed averaged 6.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 17.7 minutes. He provided some reliable energy and athleticism off the bench.

"Justin showed us that he is a tough competitor on both ends of the floor last season," vice president Kevin McHale said in a statement. "He is a player who can defend and has a nose for the basket."

The Celtics drafted Reed out of Mississippi in the second round in 2004.

Considered by some a throw-in in the trade that also brought Ricky Davis, Mark Blount and Marcus Banks to Minnesota, Reed's blue-collar attitude helped him blossom down the stretch.

Stack said the team knew what they were getting when they acquired Reed, but "he was a pleasant surprise. He seized that opportunity and created a real niche for himself with his hustle and his intensity."

While declining to discuss the terms of the deal, Stack said it put the team right at the NBA's luxury tax limit. But Stack said the team remained open to making a trade if the right deal came along and said owner Glen Taylor has given his blessing to go over the salary cap if it helps the team return to the playoffs after a two-year hiatus.
